I generally read a lot of children's literature and think it's really important to read books first before reading them with your children. I honestly can't remember issues like this in the books though, and am unsure about how I feel about it now. But then I subscribe to the idea that childhood is a safe place to learn about what real life is going to be like, rather than a fantasy kingdom of innocence. In 2002 Jacqueline was awarded the OBE for services to literacy in schools and from 2005 to 2007 she was the Children’s Laureate. As an aside, I can't think of a single character in a Jaqueline Wilson book that we read who didn't have some sort of equivalent at his school.

Yes Jacqueline Wilson tackles quite heavy subjects in her books, but they are written in a way for children to understand. Because you have a lot more world experience everything might seem a little dark, I can imagine it would for me if I was to re-read them all now. Suitcase Kid" and "The Illustrated Mum" in particular helped my son deal with his problems concerning his mother.
