Description

I generally read a lot of children's literature and think it's really important to read books first before reading them with your children. I honestly can't remember issues like this in the books though, and am unsure about how I feel about it now. But then I subscribe to the idea that childhood is a safe place to learn about what real life is going to be like, rather than a fantasy kingdom of innocence. In 2002 Jacqueline was awarded the OBE for services to literacy in schools and from 2005 to 2007 she was the Children’s Laureate. As an aside, I can't think of a single character in a Jaqueline Wilson book that we read who didn't have some sort of equivalent at his school.

I agree and I was of the same mind when mine were that age but I soon realised that they were a great trigger for conversation about the lives people were living around them and therefore helped my children to understand life as it was happening for friends. Dive into the world of Jacqueline Wilson with this amazing 5 book collection, full of the most fantastic and drama-filled fun stories to read!It also describes the girl getting pregnant by being at a party and drinking alcohol and going outside with a boy and how afterwards he left her lying on the grass? Having said that she read a few before we realised, enjoyed them and does not appear phased by the content.

One of Jacqueline’s most successful and enduring creations has been the famous Tracy Beaker, who first appeared in 1991 in The Story of Tracy Beaker. Some of Jacqueline Wilson's books are labelled 'for teen readers' on the back so keep an eye out for those. I know you think these things don't happen in your dd's world, but there may be children in her class who are going through similar situations or be from backgrounds that the books describe. I don't think it's appropriate for a primary school age child to be reading about divorce, alcoholism or children "dumped" in care homes. It describes her adoptive mum going through a breakdown and eventually committing suicide, a drunken father.

Jacqueline Wilson Collection: 10 Book Box Set - The Works

Never known a kid be harmed by reality and if anything it will make her more aware and appreciative of what she has and what other people have to go through. The Illustrated Mum won the Guardian Children’s Fiction Award, the 1999 Children’s Book of the Year at the British Book Awards and was also shortlisted for the 1999 Whitbread Children’s Book Award. I know this stuff happens in the world, but not in my little girls world and I just thing there should be some kind of guidance on her books as when I've googled it, a lot of her books seem to have dark and serious social issues as their main storyline.

If anything if children don't understand it'll prompt them to ask parents rather than find out off of other children. Yes Jacqueline Wilson tackles quite heavy subjects in her books, but they are written in a way for children to understand. Because you have a lot more world experience everything might seem a little dark, I can imagine it would for me if I was to re-read them all now. Suitcase Kid" and "The Illustrated Mum" in particular helped my son deal with his problems concerning his mother.
