Some people took their smartphones into their garden if they were lucky enough to have one, capturing flowers, plants and garden creatures. Last but not least, a leading London photography gallery is showcasing a selection of the images from the new book. I am particularly interested in how photography can help people express their creativity more effectively, or deal with mental health issues and other challenges. Unlike our previous books,’ he continues, ‘these images came in with every conceivable kind of alignment, framing etc, so it was an enormous job editing each one to get it to the optimum point.

He continues to tour with Queen, as well as doing solo work and, of course, is a committed stereoscopy evangelist. South America delivered a lot of images for the book too, and there were lots from the US and Canada.

But I think the book is such an important statement – I mean I wanted to make sure that everyone of you, to begin with, has a copy of the book.

I can point over there to Sir Charles Wheatstone and I think we should all raise a cheer for Charles Wheatstone – who made all this happen! If phone makers can put three cameras on here (he holds up his iPhone) it would be dead easy for them to put lenses one across the other. He worked in this little studio where he made portraits and didn’t even have his name above the door, but people flocked there to have their stereo portraits done on daguerreotype. A lot of people go through almost their whole lives without realising they have this wonderful depth of perception. The response was overwhelming, and as Covid continued to take its toll on the world, the fast-growing stereo community kept on snapping away, spreading beauty and hope through the uniquely powerful 3-D photographic medium.

On Wednesday 2 November 2022 Brian May hosted, and was pleased to welcome to the Proud Galleries, many contributors to the book, “Stereoscopy Is Good For You”, evening of 2 November. This show exhibits new 3-D photography from the LSC’s latest publication “Stereoscopy Is Good For You: Life in 3-D”. As it turned out, most of the people who submitted work are represented in some way, but of course some people put in irresistible work, so were featured more than once. They have two slightly different pictures to focus on and can build that picture in your mind just as they do in everyday life. Edited by Brian, the book contains the work of over 100 21st-century stereoscopic photographers from around the world during the COVID years.

Brian May: “Stereoscopy Is Good For You” – Book Signing

I have thought of some ways to make the process smoother but at the end of the day, you still have to sit and edit everything to the accuracy of a pixel. This is a unique display, inviting visitors to delve into the magic of stereoscopyfrom the Victorian era to the present, culminating with a captivating display of images from the modern day stereo community. I've been working on magazines since 1995 and am also a keen travel and portrait photographer when time allows, reaching the finals of the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year contest in 2015 and achieving my Licentiate from the Royal Photographic Society the year before. And I’m really here just to say thank you – I can’t do a speech about how to take stereo picture because you all know!Stereoscopic pictures are so much more evocative than “normal” ones and this book became a fantastic opportunity to show this off. The exhibition also comprises stunning artwork from past LSCprojects, as well as rarebehind-the-scenesimages depictingthelegendary rock band Queen, captured by stereoscopic photographer, astrophysicist, rockstar and animal activist, Brian Mayhimselfand first presented in his book,Queen in 3-D,which providesclose-up glimpses of the band as never before seen. When you look with your stereo viewer it’s as if you’re seeing through the eyes of the person who took the picture. You need to keep a firm watch on the convergence of the images and now they are aligned to avoid straining the readers’ eyes. Queen guitarist Brian May tells Geoff Harris how the pandemic inspired people worldwide to take great stereo photography.

The top, bottom and fore-edges of the pages have been gilded in 22 carat gold, and the bookblocks finished with head and tail bands and a bookmark. Stereoscopy turned out to be a “rollercoaster ride with peaks and periods of total oblivion and neglect”, he added. While it works well, he finds it frustrating that phone makers are not building a similar functionality into their phones. Brian May asked a new generation of stereo photographers around the world to show us what kept their spirits up during and following the lockdown period. Yes, we now have the crowdfunded Qoocam, which is a nice stereo stills and movie camera, but it would be nice to have something built into phones.Among the images in the book is a stereoscopic portrait of Dickens taken moments before he began reading extracts from his Christmas stories to an audience in 1858, and another of the author writing at his desk.
