About this deal

The book ends with an alarming development that leaves Parvana's story very much up in the air, encouraging readers to continue with the trilogy.

The thought-provoking story of Parvana and how she must pretend to be a boy to save her family after her father is taken by Taliban soldiers in Afghanistan. As she waits for foreign military forces to determine her fate, she remembers the past four years of her life. The book has received several literary awards, including the Peter Pan Prize and the Middle East Book Award in 2002.

I want to be able to guide them through those parts of the story so they can get the most out of it, rather than being afraid or upset while they read it alone. Parvana and her family are very close, and the Taliban, since taking power, have worked to sow distrust and suspicion amongst people and their neighbors. The author takes us right into the thick of the action with this story about a young girl whose life totally changes under their rule.

Weera is a women's rights activist and former gym teacher who is a friend of Parvana's family and is a welcome presence in the household.I was completely gripped the entire time while reading this book, and by the end of it, I was speechless. Because the woman has no burqa, Parvana waits until nightfall to leave the building and bring her home, where Mrs. Since the Taliban decreed that women must stay inside, many husbands took their wives' false legs away. But the writing wasn't what made this book impressive; the sheer character of Parvana herself, and the story she takes us along, is completely mindblowing. She has won the Governor General’s Award, the Middle East Book Award, the Peter Pan Prize, the Jane Addams Children’s Book Award and the Vicky Metcalf Award.
