The book may not make you care what happens to the people in it, but you do want to see what happens in the book. But then, like one of Norman's male nurses, I found myself nearly overcome by Rabbi Zweck's inevitable, dignified, poignant farewell to his son.

When the 1970 Booker prize winner, The Elected Member by Bernice Rubens, was short-listed with Al Barker, Elizabeth Bowen, Iris Murdoch and William Trevor, the house of English fiction looked like a shabby, suburban Edwardian rectory. Because of a change in the rules, the book was ineligible for consideration the year it was published, so the prize was awarded retroactively. For several years after 1989, Salman Rushdie was one English-language novelist everyone had heard of. When we meet him in the first few pages of this novel we learn that his career as a barrister is in ruins and he is experiencing drug-induced hallucinations. The story looks back at the past and incidents in the family history which could have contributed to Norman’s condition. You probably have to be immersed in Rabbi Zweck's anxious wait for his doctor, Levy, to ring at his door to appreciate the hilarity of Norman's overloud response: "If that's that shit Levy, tell him to piss off.

However the parish can set a different number, by resolution passed at the APCM, which would take effect the following year. Apart from the mother, Sarah, who is already dead in the current time frame of the novel, there are no unpleasant or odious characters. Having picked this up as the second of my Booker Prize winners, I was reeling from my disappointment with the first winner, and over the first couple chapters just enjoyed the clear writing, linear story, and understandable characters. In spite of the grim situation at the heart of the story, this book is full of humor and memorable characters.McEwan's temporary eclipse by events was matched, in his private life, by a catastrophic marital breakdown. Norman Zweck is committed to a mental hospital due to the hallucinations he suffers because of his addiction to amphetamines. The Council by resolution appoints at least two of its own members, whom it also has power to remove.

The fact that Norman’s problem is not as socially acceptable as that of the others is his reason for committal, but ultimately we get the impression that the entire family are just as bad as each other. It is easy to understand the pain of each character and easy to see the weaknesses that have led to the current situation. Rubens deftly uses her humor to lay bare the sadness of this life, made sadder because Norman could not see it himself. All that infant prodigy stuff, with him in short trousers till his beard started to grow, and her in those white socks to clinch the illusion.

Already elected by the public, he or she is then elected by other councillors to become Civic Leader. Norman Zweck, for instance, the lead character, is clearly and quite traditionally mad - suffering extreme amphetamine psychosis and desperately in need of a spell in a psychiatric institution to straighten out. The silverfish are a side-effect of Norman’s addiction to amphetamines, which have destroyed his career and are now destroying his mind. After his divorce, he met Annalena McAfee, an arts journalist from the Financial Times, and fell in love. The toxic combination of anger, guilt and impotence experienced by Norman's ageing and ailing father Rabbi Zweck, and his two sisters (one a middle-aged spinster still wearing the rolled white socks of her childhood, one cast out of the Jewish family circle for marrying a goy) is set down with unflinching realism, the author once again giving us the impression of direct and unfiltered access to the troubled minds of her cast.

The minister in charge of the parish and the PCC have a duty to consult together on matters of general concern and importance to the parish, and to co-operate in promoting in the parish the whole mission of the church: pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. The reader is taken through the depressing and exasperating experience of a Drug addict and his close family members. As well as being responsible for the care and upkeep of the church, churchyard and moveable items, the PCC may also be the beneficial owner of the church hall and or curate’s house. Ultimately Norman decides to pursue the law as a profession and becomes a very successful barrister.
