I spoke to Shields last week via telephone from his studio in the Irish countryside to discuss yet another remaster of the record, this one a completely analog vinyl version due in January (along with an all-analog vinyl edition of My Bloody Valentine’s 1988 debut album, Isn’t Anything). Although pigeon-holed as 'Shoegazing', it almost sounds like a bastard offspring of Grunge at times, and considering it was released the same year as Nirvana's 'Nevermind,' comparisons to that genre are expected but ultimately unfounded, as the band is deeply rooted in post-punk / alt rock but are utterly unique. my bloody valentine, the quartet of Bilinda Butcher, Kevin Shields, Deb Googe and Colm Ó Cíosóig, are widely revered as one of the most ground-breaking and influential groups of the past forty years.

Loveless was recorded on analog tape, and we mixed to analog tape, but we did all of the post-production, all of the editing, and all of that stuff that makes it Loveless—the way it all flows—in the digital domain. We came up with these really crazy edits that looked like they were going to fall apart—when we played them in the mastering places, the guys there were looking at them just thinking, How is this tape even sticking together?
