This review was originally published on Rachel’s Writings, but I thought I’d republish it here because I’m going through another phase of being obsessed with old photographs of familiar places. The architectural vocabulary is strong in this book, and I was gasping for a glossary long before the end, my residual understanding of spandrels being inadequate. This endlessly absorbing book that is at once a record of destruction, a haunting collection of relics and a door into the past. But it is a brilliant technical and logistical achievement, especially from a first-time director previously known for comedy and character roles, and a hippyish devotion to marijuana.

Before replacing your pass it may be worth checking at a tube station to ensure that there is a fault on the pass. I had rather expected that the devastation of Second World War bombing would be the dominant theme of the book, but in fact only the last (comparatively short) chapter concentrated on that dark chapter in London’s history. Please note that before sending in your faulty pass to be tested, it is advisable to keep your current pass to present for visual inspection enabling you to continue travelling while you are waiting for your replacement pass to arrive. Many of the photos in Lost London depict buildings on the verge of demolition, their interiors stripped and awaiting their fate. Read more about the condition New: A new, unread, unused book in perfect condition with no missing or damaged pages.

Our company was launched based on the fundamental belief that used books have value and should never go to waste. A Michelin-starred pub, a bar beyond a blank blue door, a book club wired for massive sound, a green hill to behold the cityʼs skyline and a restaurant above the clouds.

The beauty of the book is the well written and considered text that accompanies the excellent collection of photographs from English Heritage's archives. Very good Book cover lightly browned and rubbed, slight reader's crease on spine, tiny tear at bottom spine end, pages slightly warped. Having seized this excellent bargain, I can honestly say that I have enjoyed every last fascinating page. It's a good size for anyone thinking the panoramas version might be too big and heavy - though this book is still quite big and heavy. As you travel through time coming into London, we see trade and wealth, a merchants palace, lost churches. Please Note: This book has been transferred to Between the Covers from another database and might not be described to our usual standards.
