Description

This is a wonderful read, and the speculative aspects do not feel so far fetched either when it comes to the use of AI and how useful it could be in the law enforcement field. She believes in gut instinct, experience and being able to read people's emotions which is everything the AI Lock can't do and is only programmed to work on logic and facts. Each one has something to add to the story and each one has the potential to grow as the series develops. Pros: A solid 5 stars for creativity, dimensional and diverse characters, insightfulness regarding AI replicating humans (or should humans be replicating AI? The character of Lock is then introduced to the team, Lock is the the pivotal part of the AIDE (Artificially Intelligent Detective Entity) project.

But of course it’s a machine, there is no empathy or “reading the room” there were some LOL moments! Not only is it highly engrossing but readers are going to love Kat and Lock and the cases make for some hair raising reading! In the Blink of an Eye is a dazzling debut from an exciting new voice and asks us what we think it means to be human. The narrative is immediately engaging, the characters, not just those of Kat and Lock but the others surrounding them, create a group that the reader wants to spend time with. Kat's team includes DI Rayan Hassan, a confident, self assured officer who insists on constantly challenging Kat's decisions, and the more diffident and apologetic DS Debbie Browne, facing her own personal issues.

An ingenious police procedural with a clever twist, a delightful cast of characters paired with witty banter and relatable humour, intriguing cold case investigations - neatly sums this compelling and highly entertaining debut. Lock has been programmed to provide analysis and admin support which it can do in a fraction of the time it would take an officer but what it doesn’t have is that human mind. A fresh and intriguing detective double act – I fell hard for all-too-human Kat and her AI colleague Lock .Kat doesn’t believe algorithms can truly account for the vagaries of humankind, or replace the experience and instincts she, like most good police officers, often rely on. In fact, I did check a couple of times to see if our lead, Detective Chief Superintendent Kat Frank had featured in previous outings. Kat is often frustrated by Lock's way of doing things, and their interactions are often laugh out loud funny, whilst always being serious too.

k.a a robot, as part of the Home Secretary’s latest pet project to improve and advance policing, and minimise bias and prejudice. The whole process of choosing which missing persons to concentrate on is complex in itself, and as time moves on, it becomes clear that there's far more to these cases than originally thought. There’s such a thought-provoking consideration of morality threaded through as the catalyst for the narrative so that even when In the Blink of an Eye is finished, it resonates and unsettles the reader. Following eighteen months on leave for personal family reasons, DCS Kat Frank is given a new team, and assigned to work cold cases. The purpose is to learn and evaluate the pros and cons of how AIDE's can support police work, with the worry that this might lead to cuts in police numbers. This reads like it could be the beginning of a brand new series, and if so, I'm definitely up for it! Kat puts together a small team and with the assistance of Locke (who has no filters on his thoughts - LOL) they start to look into cold cases. The main character was well-developed and the emotional impact of the story and relationships strong.
