The cover may have some limited signs of wear but the pages are clean, intact and the spine remains undamaged. Jill and I’ and ‘said Jill’ have been corrected to ‘Ann and I’ and ‘said Ann’ in the fourth paragraph. On 1 March 1934, she married Samuel Ferguson, a widower and electrical engineer [2] with two sons at the Water Lane Methodist Church, in Wilmslow.

Seven paragraphs (37 lines) detailing Ann’s bulgy saddlebags and the hiding of the vests under a hedge have been deleted. It is easy to read and engaging, and I enjoyed the way that Jill directly "speaks" to and confides in the reader.Jill's Gymkhana, A Stable for Jill, Jill has two ponies (later republished as Jill and the Runaway), Jill enjoys her Ponies, Jill's Riding Club, Rosettes for Jill, Jill and the Perfect Pony, Pony Jobs for Jill (later republished as Challenges for Jill) and Jill's Pony Trek. I’d love to think that Jill will find a new legion of young fans (though I suspect some explanations from aging parents will be needed!

eta with pointless nitpicks about minor details, not about the book itself: my book says first published 1949 so not sure why Goodreads has it as a 1955 first publish date. citation needed] In contrast, Ferguson's Jill is an active, independent and witty character who defies post-war expectations for English girls by scorning ladylike pursuits, treating boys her own age as equals, and working hard to achieve her goals. Written in 1949, read by me around 1972 and rediscovered thanks to Lucy Mangan’s wonderful Bookworm. The first in the 'Jill' series, reissued in 2009 by Fidra Books with the full, original text, unmodernised and un-Bowdlerised, and the Caney illustrations. Missing last two paragraphs (nine lines) describing Jill’s enthusiasm for gymkhanas, telling her Mother about Martin and disappointment he had not come to Pool Cottage. It pushes a pony-based value system of mucking out and putting lots of effort into something you love, and while I can't really 'get' it, I can sort of appreciate that from afar. Notably, in spite of their poverty and her insistence that Jill must pay for Black Boy's upkeep herself, she refuses to allow Jill to take money for walking some smaller children to school, and is all set to refuse a gift from Martin who is pretty strict himself because it's too generous. You mean, if she had two eyes she'd be riding like a centaur,' said Martin, and we all laughed as we munched our sandwiches and put away a lot of ice cream.

Missing four lines from first paragraph describing the frilled chintz dressing table and how her case sent by carrier was there. Then we went to have a look at the ponies and make a fuss of them for doing so well, and we found them resting quietly in the shade of the trees and making soft little nickering noises of pleasure when they heard us speaking to them, and saw the handfuls of oats we held out to them. Two paragraphs (19 lines) missing, describing a ride with Miss Harvey in which she tells Jill she should be ready for gymkhanas, and reference to the need for a new saddle. Every girl in Jill's class seems to have a pony and they are all competitive riders who show up to all the events. It uses the original text, which means I discovered a few new elements to the story that were cut from my version - that was a delight. She then moved to Manchester and took a job as a secretary, supplementing her income by writing a regular column for the British Weekly.

Missing entire last six-line paragraph describing Jill having a good ‘howl’ about not being able to afford Blackie. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Hardly needs introduction - the classic adventures of Jill begin when she finds herself the owner of a pony and has to learn all about caring for and riding him. Out of print for years, this is a reprint of the 1949 original using the original first edition text. It's a dream come true, but Jill very soon finds out there's a lot more to owning a pony than she realised.
