With the Digic X processor on board, it’s fair to expect good things of the R5’s performance – and so it proved in our tests. The new EOS R5 sits in the hand like a more streamlined version of an EOS DSLR (like the 5D Mark IV). The dials and buttons have a similar placement and the front grip is large. If you already shoot Canon this will feel new, but completely familiar. The body feels tough and looks to have a robust, practical, ergonomic style that shouts, ‘modern working professional'. The EOS R5's pro leanings are also apparent in its higher level of weather-proofing, along with its superior viewfinder... Canon EOS R5 vs EOS R6: EVF The Canon EOS R5, on the other hand, is clearly aimed at professionals who demand a lot from their gear, including highly detailed stills and equally detailed video footage. Its 45MP sensor and 8K raw video footage blurs the lines between photographer, videographer and filmmaker, especially when C-Log is used. We re-tested the Canon EOS R5's video performance after the arrival of its 1.1.0 firmware update, which promised to "extend video shooting times in some situations". You can read the full results of our video tests here, but the short answer is that while it slightly improves recovery times in some modes and situations, it's not a radical change from the original figures quoted for the EOS R5.

The second item on most screens is the ‘Shutter count’. This shows how many times the shutter has been fired for still images (movies are not counted) on this particular battery on this charge. When the battery is recharged the number is reset, so it cannot show you the total number of shots that the battery handled. The ‘Shutter count’ is useful as it shows you how many shots you are getting from a single charge of the battery. If this number starts dropping it is a sure sign that the battery condition is starting to deteriorate. On paper, the EOS R5 might be the best hybrid mirrorless camera on the market. It’s both high resolution and full-frame, producing 8,192 x 5,464 resolution files that weighed in, on average, at about 60MB each. EVFs have long been a point of discussion among photographers coming from DSLRs. In the past, lagging and low-res EVFs have been one reason to stay away from mirrorless cameras for me, too. However, the newest generations of EVFs are very good and while I still prefer looking into a prism instead of yet another LCD, the additional features that an EVF brings are hard to dismiss. In fact, it has made me an always-M-shooter, as I outlined earlier. The information displayed in the EVF can be customized. For instance, one can choose between different sized histograms (big and small) or different grid overlays to support composing. Especially the histogram is a game changer for me. Gone are the days of having to take a slew of images to arrive at the perfectly ETTR exposure.

The final and possibly most important information is the recharge performance. This shows the battery’s condition and its ability to supply power. Unfortunatly, the R5 "power switch" does not physically disconnect power from the processor. Regardless of the switch position, power is supplied and can be used by the processor and wireless transciever to run Bluetooth and WiFi as well as the systems which recognize and scan the directory of memory cards when a card is installed. This happens if the switch is in the "OFF" position. Keeping Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections in operation will use battery power to keep the transciever "alive". The wireless operation is discussed on pp. 597 of the R5 Advanced User's Guide:Portraits, landscapes, macro, video, the list goes on and on. Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF, paired with the high-resolution sensor, IBIS capabilities and features like portrait relighting make this a powerhouse for professionals.

Although the R5 isn't directly replacing any current model it does bring a strong set of specs to the table over a lot of its competitors. The ability to shoot 8K 12-bit video internally, IBIS up to 8 stops and 45MP images that can be captured at up to 20fps with autofocus. It’s also quite a bit lighter – 680g with a card and battery, compared to the R5’s 738g – although you lose the shooting data screen on the top of the camera, instead having to rely on the touchscreen monitor to see how you’re set up. Don’t forget that RF-mount lenses also have a control ring, so getting the EOS R5 set up just-so is easy. If you’re coming from another of Canon’s cameras, the learning curve is basically flat – the R5 is easy to adjust to. Newcomers will find the menus responsive, intuitive, and powerful, whether you’re a power user or launching into photography for the first time. I suspect it's possible that IF your camera had its wireless mode enabled, AND was in proximity to your phone which had also had the Canon Camera Connect App running you could have had a communications link running that drew down the battery. While the Canon EOS R5 has the upper hand when it comes to resolution, the EOS R6 has a theoretical edge for shooting in very low light.

The proof will in the pudding, and until we’ve had the chance to shoot with a full review unit it’s impossible to say if the R6 offers better low-light performance than the R5 – but it is something to bear in mind if you do a lot of your shooting in the gloom of dusk or night. Canon EOS R5 vs EOS R6: design and handling With such a powerful new sensor and image processor, you'll need the means to shoot more and for longer. For this, Canon has included a combination of a super-fast CFexpress card slot and an SD UHS-II card slot, easily capable of recording large images and 8K footage. Canon's Cloud Service Having dual SD and CFexpress card slots means you can use what you have already and upgrade your cards when you have the chance in the future.

Build Quality, Ergonomics and Handling

This is because the R5 needs faster read/write speeds, as it shoots stills at 45MP compared to the R6’s 20MP, and can capture 8K Raw video footage, with 4K oversampled 120fps video footage. Capturing that kind of video data simply isn't possible on today's SD UHS-II cards. Canon EOS R5 vs EOS R6: Battery life
