Description

As with most dice games of this nature, the decisions mainly involve which dice to keep and which to re-roll.

The sheriff's job is to kill the outlaws, the detective's job is to keep the sheriff alive, the outlaws job is to kill the sheriff and the renegades job is to be the last man standing. If I tried my hardest to nitpick, then I guess the abilities of certain characters seem more useful than others, but this really doesn't damage the game so it's not worth worrying about. Each player is given a character at random, which tells you your maximum health along with your character’s special power. The intersection of some character powers with some dice rolls offers glimpses into this, but not reliably. That’s the spirit of the experience you’re getting here, and it’s exactly as weirdly disconnected as it sounds. It certainly has its place as a fast filler, but gone are many aspects of the original version that made it a hit and so much more appealing than this version. During the game this will lead to many heated debates and appeals to the Sheriff, whose role is always visible. Whenever a player rolls a green arrow symbol, they must immediately take an arrow from the center of the table, even if they choose to reroll the dice.

Within Bang though, I’m not sure that actually holds true and it’s because of the ambiguity of intention that comes from the central role of the dice. It’s fine to play something just because it’s new, but it’s not a reason I can ever use in one of these critiques.system is very good about that in general (including its sister game, Samurai Sword), and it really shines in this short game. It’s not much of a game for spectators, which is a problem, but since you’re mostly done with a full go in about fifteen minutes it’s not something I’d particularly worry about. You need to remember what players did, who they targeted, and on a higher level… what dice did they choose to reroll and which did they choose to keep? While the cards do exhibit some degree of colour clash across various categories of colour blindness, they show the name of your role prominently and you’ll never be in a position, at least during play, where you need to covertly observe another player’s identity.
