The reader then spends the next 48 hours with Leo as he sulks around in the heat, attempts to lose his virginity, gets into a fistfight with a bully, and mostly has a miserable time as that classic archetype of the misunderstood teen. Translated by Sam Taylor, translator of Lullaby by Leila Slimani, The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair by Joël Dicker and HHhH by Laurent BinetPRAISE FOR HEATWAVE: "This is a searingly vivid novel that depicts the torments of adolescence in a sensual, carnal way. Mooie sfeerschepping van het campingleven ook, ik heb nooit op een camping verbleven en bij het lezen van sommige passages weet ik weer waarom me dat nooit heeft aangesproken. I could almost feel the intense heat, and thus I could empathize with the protagonist's apathy caused by the heat. The blurb immediately gave me goosebumps, a seventeen-year-old who finds another boy killing himself, and decides in a split second, to bury the boy.

We also use them to help detect unauthorized access or activity that violate our terms of service, as well as to analyze site traffic and performance for our own site improvement efforts. It's the penultimate day of the holidays and Leonard, who clearly has some kind of social anxiety and possibly some kind of neurodivergence has had an awful time. The story just focuses on the day after what happened, the last day on the campsite for Leo and his family. I raced through the novella, appreciated the brevity of the writing and the emotions of the character.

That may explain why Wright, in an essay included here, says its focus on race is I loved the writing, which is spare but highly evocative, and I admired the way that the author used the enclosed world of the campsite to fuel the claustrophobic tension that mounts throughout. The best attribute of this 'book' is that it's so short - you can get through it in little over an hour, which is a blessing.

With echoes of the films of Francois Ozon, this intense, slim novel is a hot summer read that lingers long after you finish the last page. I enjoyed this much more than I expected - a dark and cynical little novella, but somehow sympathetic as well. The narrator is a 17 year old boy on vacation, feeling completely isolated while surrounded by the revelry of others. The ending - I presume - was intended to make me question everything else I'd read in the previous 100 pages as some sort of clever 'did I read it wrong' twist.
