Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a game that ran terribly using PCIe 3.0 relative to what we saw with 4.0, though I was using the highest quality preset. This saw 4.0 deliver 38% greater performance and that margin was heavily reduced to 18% with the high preset, then 9% with medium and then 6% with low. Still, the issue is that the game looks and runs great using the highest and high quality presets with PCIe 4.0, so dropping so much performance when using PCIe 3.0 simply isn't acceptable. The GA106 die has proven flexible for Nvidia, scaling all the way up to its RTX A2000 line of professional-graphics GPUs (successors to the Quadro line), down to some of its mobile RTX laptop GPUs. Meanwhile, speaking of laptop GPUs, the AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT is also based on the Navi 24 die. I can't help but feel AMD could have done so much better here, but it looks as though the Radeon brand is destined to flounder. That's a real shame given how competitive they became at the high-end this generation, though even there they've failed to capitalize due to supply woes. Watch Dogs Legion, already at the precipice of unplayability at 1080p/Ultra, sank from 30fps with PCIe 4.0 to just 24fps with PCIe 3.0. Shadow of the Tomb Raider, on 1080p/Ultimate/SMAA, dropped from 57fps to 49fps, with Assassin’s Creed Valhalla getting the worst of it: its 39fps average on Ultra High quality got chopped in half to 19fps.

Elden Ring did close the gap between the RX 6500 XT and the RTX 3050, somewhat: the AMD card’s 50fps at 1080p/Maximum wasn’t painfully far behind the Nvidia GPU’s 56fps. That’s still more than a 10% advantage in the RTX 3050’s favour, mind, and the RX 6500 XT’s 1440p/Maximum result of 37fps wasn’t as smooth as the RTX 3050’s 42fps. I'd expect far more silicon in the GPU itself, a larger aggregated memory bus, and more system memory. Make it 8GB of GDDR5 and we'd still be happy, it wouldn't have to be GDDR6 down at this end of the market.
