Description

Butterfly kits are a great way to start of your nature study into the life cycle of the butterfly they are fairly inexpensive and provide you with everything that you need to grow, nurture and then release the butterflies into the wild. Butterflies are nearsighted but can see many of the same colors that we can - as well as ultraviolet colors that we are unable to see. This grow your own butterfly kit is designed as a starter kit to get small children interested in the world of butterflies. The small terrarium is large enough for five butterflies, and there’s a small opening in the sides for easy access.

Our Butterfly Breeding Kit features caterpillars of the Painted Lady Butterfly (Vanessa cardui, L), which are native, migrating butterfly, that can fly thousands of miles in search of food. They lay up to 500 eggs and their caterpillars feed on weeds such as nettles, so gardeners don’t need to worry! Once you have released your butterflies, they can often be seen for several days- especially if you have a butterfly friendly garden and feeder. These Butterfly Breeding kits come with everything you need to raise your own Painted Lady butterflies.

Zaya, D. N., Pearse, I. S., and Spyreas, G. (2017). Long-term trends in Midwestern milkweed abundances and their relevance to monarch butterfly declines. BioScience, 67(4), 343–356. https://doi-org.proxy.lib.odu.edu/10.1093/biosci/biw186 caterpillars (a live butterfly culture) will arrive in a clear plastic cup with all of the nutritious food they need. Place the cup in a safe place away from direct sunlight. The caterpillars will remain in the cup and will eat, spin silk and grow to TEN times their original size! After seven to ten days they will hang upside down and harden into chrysalides (chrysalides are also known as pupae). However, butterfly kits aren’t just for educational purposes. You can raise butterflies at home to release into your garden. Many gardeners do this because butterflies are excellent pollinators. Or, from an ecological perspective—there is a decline in butterfly populations. So, raising butterflies at home to release outdoors is a great way to do something for the environment.

If conditions aren’t right for releasing butterflies, keep them indoors in the mesh terrarium and feed them regularly. The birth of the butterfly? After 7 -14 days the chrysalides will darken and you will be able to see the colours of the butterflies through the shell. As the butterfly emerges, it will rest while pumping its wings to full size. After 1 or 2 hours the wings will be full sized and hard and the butterfly is ready to fly. Now you can decorate the inside of your Pavilion or Garden with flowers, twigs & leaves. You can keep your butterflies for 2 – 3 days feeding them sugar solution (sugar and water) or fruit before releasing them in your garden. During this time, the caterpillar goes through a complete metamorphosis. After the transformation, the ugly grub emerges from the chrysalis as a beautiful butterfly or moth.Once you have the kit you follow the instruction booklets and you can then easily observe the caterpillars grow, pupate and then emerge as beautiful butterflies. Raising Butterflies without a Kit Cup of 3-5 LIVE caterpillars with food or voucher to redeem for caterpillars (caterpillars available March to mid-September) Butterflies will often feed from mud puddles to ingest minerals and salts, which are important supplements to their diet.

Raise LIVE butterflies and release them to Nature with the Butterfly Garden kit. This kit contains all you need to hatch five Painted Lady Butterflies. It perfectly compliments the study of insects and life and living processes - for use in the classroom or home. The Butterfly Garden includes reusable hatching net, (30cm tall), a certificate for five Painted Lady ( Vanessa cardui L.) caterpillars and full nutrition, feeding pipette and full instructions. The life cycle of the caterpillars takes approximately three to five weeks. This “cup of caterpillars” is a small kit that includes five baby caterpillars. The grubs are shipped along with food for safe transit.

Caterpillars spin silk using tiny spinnerets located on the lower part of the head. When you see a caterpillar moving its head from side to side, it is usually spinning silk. Caterpillars have false legs at the rear of their bodies, which can be used for grasping or as "suction" cups. Like these ideas? Please share them to inspire other teachers to incorporate compassion for animals into their science lessons. Whether you already have a serious science lover in the family, or are trying to spark a new interest in STEM, growing butterflies at home is a fun way to teach kids about life cycles. Sure, you could just read them The Very Hungry Caterpillar (who doesn't love this classic children's book written by by Eric Carle?), but this hands-on method will captivate them for weeks, as they learn about metamorphosis and watch their caterpillars grow gorgeous wings. Painted Lady butterflies can adjust to almost any habitat. They are found in suburban, agricultural, swamp, bog, marsh, tundra, desert, meadow, forest, rainforest and mountain environments.Caterpillars don’t need to be given water, they get the water from their leaves. However, they do like a slightly humid atmosphere so it’s a really good idea to mist the net once a day to keep the humidity levels up especially if you have air con or heating on. Butterfly wings are formed by layers of "chitin", the protein that makes up an insect's exoskeleton. Make sure the kit comes with all necessary supplies, including food, habitat, and instructions on how to care for your caterpillars. You may also want to look for a kit that offers a guarantee of the live arrival of the caterpillars.
