About this deal

This is our rum crafted as an homage to Xaman, Mayan god of the North Star. It features 16 year old rums which have been finished in Mayan Ceiba barrels. I am proud to be the only distillery in the world to have these kinds of barrels, made using the indigenous Ceiba tree. This gives this rum its sophisticated flavor profile. I personally selected the wood of this tree because according to the legend of this god, he would come out at night and rest during the day atop a sacred Ceiba tree. Crafted as a homage to Kinich Ahau, Mayan God of the sun, whose sacred colour is red. The Mayan people used the mineral Cinabrio to make red dye. The name "Cihuatan" is deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of El Salvador. It is derived from the Nahuat language, spoken by the indigenous Pipil people, and means "The Land Beside the Sleeping Woman." This name is a homage to an ancient Mayan city, the remnants of which lie near the distillery and the nearby Guazapa mountain, which is said to resemble a sleeping woman.

As mentioned above, this wouldn’t have been possible without the vision and entrepreneurial spirit of a group of Salvadorans that wanted to create El Salvador’s ambassador to the world through rum. From the start, they were commited to quality. If they were to make a product worthy of being our country’s ambassador, it had to be top quality. That is why since 2004, we kept distilling and aging and waited 10 years to sell our first bottle of rum. This rum was 8 years old. Now we are very happy, because Ron Cihuatán is the perfect souvenir that Salvadorans proudly give from their country. Despite being a newcomer, Cihuatan Rum has already made its mark on the international stage, receiving accolades and awards in various spirit competitions. This recognition is a testament to the quality and craftsmanship that goes into each bottle. Named after Xaman, Mayan God of the North Star, the protector of Cihuatán valley. Xaman was believed to rest on sacred Ceiba trees, the Mayan tree of life.

Cihuatán Xaman XO - initially matured for 15 years in former bourbon barrels, before finishing for one year in Mayan Ceiba barrels. Cihuatán Xamanist der bisher älteste Rum aus der Licorera Cihuatán. Er reift insgesamt 16 Jahre lang: Die ersten 15 Jahre in ehemaligen Bourbonfässern, ehe er in mayanischem Ceiba-Holz seine einjährige Veredelung erfährt. Das Ergebnis ist ein weicher Rum mit Aromen von Bacon, gegrillter Ananas, Gewürznelken, Balsamico-Toast, Pflaumen und Leder. To me, rum has never tasted as good as these! Fantastic tropical fruitiness coupled with toffee, chocolate and chilli spice – Amazing!

Nose: Lush tropical fruits again, mainly mango. There’s furniture polish and creamy vanilla caramels which grow stronger after a time.

The team at the Cihuatan rum distillery have created unique rums that tell a story of their Mayan ancestors.
